SUCCESSFUL LAMINITIS TREATMENT
HORSE: LEEROY

Clinical Examination:

LEEROY presented 2/5 lame at the walk left front on the 18th of Apr with a strong digital pulse, heat in the foot and sensitive to thumb pressure to the sole rostral to the tip of the frog. The dorsal hoof wall of the left front has a discharging abscess at the coronary band with multiple wall deficits running down to the solar surface.

Radiographs on initial examination showed extreme active lysis of the solar margin of P3 indicative of a potential osteomyelitis in addition to sinkage and rotational laminitis with multiple gas caps dorsally and ventrally.

The diseased tissue was resected from the coronary down removing all infected material exposing distal P3.

On the 6th of Jun (49 days later) LEEROY presented sound with no digital pulse and no detectable heat. No discharge was evident from the solar or coronary post operative areas.

On re-examination 30mm of new dorsal wall growth was evident as indicated by the red arrow below Fig 3. The hoof capsule was stable with no evidence of further collapse or rotation of P3.

Comments:

Resolution post operatively is encouraging with no recurrence of the osteomyelitis and stabilisation of the hoof capsule.

30mm of new hoof wall growth in 49 days combined with an increase of sole depth of 8.65mm is exceptional (monthly rate dorsal hoof wall growth of approximately 20mm)

Hoof growth is remarkable for 42 days and is critical in sinkage and rotational cases for the survival of the horse

Recommendations:

Continue to pack the operative site daily.
Continue feeding Total Gold at 3 x scoops once per day.
Continue feeding Teff and Bran mash.

SUCCESSFUL PEDAL BONE FRACTURE TREATMENT

Clinical Examination:

The filly presented sound at the walk however with a mild bilateral digital pulse.
The left lateral sole has delaminated with healthy new sole re growth.

Radiographic Examination:

Left Front Hoof: Dorso ventral radiographs from today show considerable resolution of the Type IV solar margin fractures evident medially and laterally on the 10th of Jan 24 as indicated by the red arrows below. One medial fracture remains as indicated.

Right Front Hoof: Dorso ventral views show again significant resolution of both medial and lateral type IV fractures. An additional fracture can be identified medially.

Comments:

Fracture resolution times have been unexpectedly short.

Recommendations:

Continue daily bandage changes applying topical iodine as directed for the next 5 days.
Shoe with alloys seated out to circumference without side clips and apply Sole pack CS once soles are hardened.
The filly should remain in box rest walking 20 mins twice daily until shod and re-evaluated 7 days post shoeing.
Continue Bone Gold at 3 x scoops once per day.

HORSE: HERO

Clinical examination on 31^st Aug showed skin irritation of the base of the tail, mane and poll. The base of the tail and mid neck dorsal crest shows focal discharging sites of infection.

Re examination on 1^st Dec 23 shows resolution of topical infection and hair regrowth over mane, face and tail base as seen in photographs.

History:

The gelding has been treated previously with various unknown corticosteroids that had proved nonresponsive.

Recommendations:

Continue TOTAL GOLD supplementation and daily rugging.

Re-examination of the mare shows considerable resolution of all associated lesions as per photographs. The sub dermal infection has resolved with significant follicular regrowth over the tail base, rump, neck and face as per photographs.

The mare has gained weight, appears comfortable and the seborrheic smell has dissipated.
